LYCABETTUS TOWNHOUSE

Athens, 2023

In the foothills of Mount Lycabettus, this townhouse was built in four stages. In the late 19th century, a series of rooms, with a communal kitchen and bathroom, were clustered around an internal courtyard. A residence on the second floor was added in the 1930s, when the interwar façade, cement tile floors, and ceiling mouldings were introduced. The marble staircase, terrazzo and herringbone floors date from the 1950s. It is one of the few detached houses in the area that has not been demolished and replaced by apartment buildings.

The entire building was restored and transformed into a single residence. All the original elements were carefully preserved, creating a palimpsest of architectural styles that coalesce into a coherent whole. Where floors could not be saved, they were replaced with the same materials. Glass partitions, doors, and windows in various shapes and frames open up new sources of light. Custom shelving, consoles, sofas, and tables in natural materials are interlaid with Ottoman-era antiques, Greek crafts, and mid-war design classics. The rooms flow into one another through a spatial narrative that unites past and present.
