VARDIKOS MANSION

Patmos, 2011

This listed residence is one of the oldest buildings in Chora, the hilltop capital of Patmos. The property dates to 1453 when the original owners fled to Patmos after the fall of Constantinople, along with other prominent Byzantine families.

With the use of local materials and craftmanship, new and oldelements coexist, drawing a continuous line between past and present. Original antique pieces that belonged to the house are layered with kilims, maps, and textiles from different eras and Greek origins — an eclectic style typical of the seafaring merchants from Patmos, who picked up exquisite furniture and objects on their travels. Custom-made beds, cabinets, and woodwork in the traditional Patmian style are painted in satin shades of grey, light blue, and off white.
